Hashimoto’s disease is a type of autoimmune system disorder. It specifically targets the thyroid: your immune system begins to attack the thyroid gland, which causes inflammation. The inflammation results in an under-active gland, also known as hypothyroidism or low thyroid.
The thyroid is an endocrine gland located right in front of the neck — shaped like a butterfly. It affects your metabolic rate, which is how your body uses energy. It also regulates other bodily functions, which include your breathing, heart rate, and body temperatures, among others.
Hashimoto’s disease affects thyroid functionality and is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the U.S. We can provide Hashimoto’s disease help to all of our patients who come in for a diagnosis.
